Colorado Benefits from Children’s Health Insurance Law

President Obama signed the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) legislation into law today.  This important program helps to provide money at the state level (in Colorado we use Child Health Plans Plus) for health insurance for children in lower income families.

Colorado’s Child Heatlh Plans Plus (CHP+) currently provides affordable health insurance coverage for 50,000 children and 1,300 pregnant women.  Nationally, the plan may cover as many as seven million children and lifts the ban on covering immigrant children, who would likely otherwise wind up seeking care in Emergency Rooms.

As the nation’s economy struggles it is important to have these safety net programs, as we all need a hand up at one time or another.   This is the right plan at the right time, as all children should have at least basic health insurance coverage, here in Colorado and across the country.
