Free Preventive Services Covered Under New Health Plans

Preventative care is important for people of all ages and can help you avoid serious illness.  Under the Affordable Care Act law, if you get a new health insurance policy you and your family are eligible for FREE preventive services, including screenings, vaccinations and counseling, as per the policy.

Money Saving Tips: Use in-network providers.  Confirm the doctor codes the visit as “Preventative” and not “Diagnostic” or else you may be billed for the visit.  If you have a complaint about a health concern, that is diagnostic.  If you’re getting preventative care because of age or family history, that is generally considered preventative.  Note that your plan can require you to pay some costs of the office visit, if the preventive service is not the primary purpose of the visit, or if your doctor bills the preventive services separately from the office visit.

For new health insurance plans (or policies effective after September 23, 2010) the following preventive services should be covered without your having to pay a copayment or co-insurance or meet your deductible, in-network.
