Cigna is leaving Colorado’s individual market in 2027.
If you have a Cigna individual or family plan, you’ll need a new carrier for 2027. The good news: your 2026 coverage doesn’t change, and you have a clear path forward.
On its spring earnings call, Cigna announced it will exit the individual and family (ACA) health insurance market nationally, including in Colorado, starting in 2027. The change takes effect January 1, 2027.
For most people, the first reaction is a worried one: does my insurance just disappear? No. Here is what’s actually true, in plain terms.
What’s actually happening
Cigna is one of several carriers that have stepped back from Colorado’s individual market in recent years. The company has pointed to instability in the market and a decision to focus on other parts of its business, like employer plans and pharmacy services.
This affects individual and family plans only, whether you bought yours through Connect for Health Colorado (the state exchange) or directly off-exchange. If your Cigna coverage comes through your employer or through a Medicare Advantage plan, this change does not affect you.

What we’ll help you check
Switching carriers isn’t just picking a price. The two things that quietly cause the most surprise are provider networks (whether your doctors are in-network) and drug formularies (whether a plan covers your specific medications). Here’s what we go through together:
- Whether your current doctors and hospitals are in the new plan’s network
- Whether your prescriptions are on the new plan’s formulary, and at what cost
- How the deductibles, copays and out-of-pocket maximums compare
- Whether you qualify for premium tax credits to lower your monthly cost
- Which remaining Colorado carrier is the best fit for how you actually use care

Common questions
Will my coverage stop in 2026?
No. Your current Cigna individual plan is good through December 31, 2026, with no changes to your benefits, network or prescription coverage this year. The change applies to 2027.
Do I need to do anything right now?
Not today. The time to act is Open Enrollment, November 1 through December 15, 2026, for coverage that starts January 1, 2027. If you’d like, we can note your information now and reach out when it’s time so nothing slips through the cracks.
Does this affect my Cigna plan through work or my Medicare plan?
No. This change is limited to individual and family (ACA) plans. Employer-sponsored Cigna coverage and Cigna Medicare Advantage plans are not affected.
Will my new plan cover the same doctors and medications?
It may differ, which is exactly why we check. Before you enroll, we confirm whether your doctors are in the new plan’s network and whether your medications are on its formulary, so there are no surprises in January.
Does it cost more to use a broker?
No. Our help is 100% free with no mark-up. You pay the same monthly premium for the same plan whether you enroll through us, another broker, or directly. The difference is you’ll have a local guide handling the details with you.
