Public Plan Progresses

July 31st, 2009 – Yesterday the House Energy and Commerce Committee voted 35 to 24,  in favor of establishing a government run health insurance plan..   Democrats defeated a Republican effort to eliminate a section of the bill that would create the public health insurance option.

Conservatives are concerned the public plan would lead slowly but inevitably to a government takeover of our health care system.   Several leading economists agree with this as the government could gain an unfair advantage over private insurance companies, causing a mass exodus to the public plan.

With the government plan, said Representative Mike Rogers, Republican of Michigan, “you will have to call a bureaucrat and hope to God his calculator is more compassionate and smarter than your doctor.”
