College Health Insurance for Students

Tuition, books, rent, food, fun . . . health insurance?

With all the things students have to pay for in college or at the university, paying for health insurance could wind up as last on their list. But what’s last on their list could be the first thing to put college students at serious financial risk.

The best move is for students to first understand how their current health insurance plan covers them, especially if going to school out of state.

If the school offers health insurance coverage, make sure it’s comprehensive (covers major claims as well as doctor visits and/or visits to any on-campus treatment centers.  A simple question you can ask the school is if the plan is considered “Minimum Essential Coverage” under the Affordable Care Act.  You also want to find out if the plan covers them year around, even if the student comes how for holidays for for the summer.

If currently covered by a parent’s plan, it’s good to isolate how much extra the students portion of their premium is and compare that coverage to what it costs to to cover the student on their plan.

If the student files taxes as a Single Tax Filer and has low income, it is possible the student may qualify for free coverage under that states Medicaid program, so that may be worth looking into.
